Cost-per-wearable? Our DNA is in your jeans…
What is the true financial cost of clothes you wear every day? That 20% of your wardrobe you love to don and feel as snug as a bug in -
In multiple seasons?
In multiple ways?
Actually, what is the cost of the other 80%? Have you ever priced up your wardrobe for selling it on? (more on how to search, snap, sell here).
I remember my first pair of jeans - it was my one amazing wardrobe thing!
I had one pair and they lasted years.
I could style them up or down at my leisure and they were my no.1 choice when switching from school, work and sports uniforms.
I also remember my last jeans - because I wore them out and won them in Las Vegas. Anything goes in Vegas!
Everything stays in Vegas too but those jeans went beyond! They even transformed from a permanent trouser to permanent shorts!
So I like jeans, don’t get me wrong, they are not great for travel or hiking in though. Depending on the cut, they can be very uncomfortable for moving in - necessary and needed for wellness between today’s digital working patterns. Jeans just feel hot and heavy and when wet, they take an age to dry, clinging to the skin meanwhile.
Mosquitoes bite right through jeans too - yes, they love even thick fabrics that sit close to the skin.
Why do I like jeans at all? Well, they clothe many people in the world with a low cost-per-wear.
They don’t need much washing either and are practical and versatile.
The conclusion? I don’t buy them now, because it takes way more than a village’s daily water supply to create just one pair (source: UN quoted Lifecycle Assessments).
That’s nuts.
There’s a kernel of hope though, I read about it again today. It’s that The Future of Clothing is Circular (source: More Luxury Club).
Cynthia & Shika run this community to advocate sharing our clothing as follows:
Buy what you wear daily, ideally second-hand for sustainability.
Rent items for one-time occasions or to experiment with your style.
Co-own investment pieces you’ll wear on rotation, enjoying the benefits of affordability and sustainability.
You can book a free call with them to receive money off their service (we are not affiliated to them, but dig their service promoting fully circular wardrobes.
(Feel free to mention Mozzie Cozzie to them, we have met them out and about - they may well stock us someday if you do!)
You can invest in something just as versatile as jeans, just with proper certified sustainable fibres - check out our low key Instagram for a quick glance to understanding us and MORE!
Mozzie Cozzie’s cost-per-wear is £1 in year 1 and we last for years so it’s just any repair costs after that (fixes go back to the UK source factory).
This compares to typical, topical, good quality insect repellent for people on the move at £8 cost-per-wear for a year’s supply. That is likely to go upwards year on year just like the number of insects and vector-borne diseases.
For fun, we looked at sustainable, UK handmade jumpsuits and they land at £7 cost-per-wear for the same period. We’ve not tested how long they last because we don’t like tight fits, or the clothing that feel skimpy - using half the fabric. That’s because we know from years of working in the outside, in open air that the mozzie’s love all that!
Our sample jumpsuits got MORE than a rigorous testing over 5 years of our research & development - in all climates, all times of night and day, with the help of male and female bodies and one skilled worker (we had one button ripped off because it got caught on a seat belt, so we reinforced the design to stop that).
